A teenager who was shot and killed in north Minneapolis earlier this week was identified Tuesday as a member of a Republican congressional candidate’s campaign.

The campaign of Lacy Johnson, who is running against Democratic incumbent Rep. Ilhan Omar, confirmed the 17-year-old worked as an intern.

“Today, we are shocked and saddened to learn of this senseless act of violence. It is shocking and unnecessary acts of violence like this that prove why change is more needed than ever in our community.” the Johnson campaign said in a statement.

The teen was not doing campaign activities when the shooting happened, the campaign said.

On Monday, the teen and another man, who is also a member of the Johnson campaign, were shot outside a Super USA convenience store when a shooter or shooters opened fire, Minneapolis police said.

The teen was pronounced dead after EMS members brought them to a local hospital for treatment.

The man, who has not been identified, was is in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators are searching for one or more perpetrators who fled the scene on foot.

Minneapolis has experienced a surge in gun violence since the death of George Floyd earlier this summer. Floyd, a Black man, died while in the custody of Minneapolis police.

This city is on pace to double the number of homicides recorded in 2019, according to Minneapolis police.
