President Trump accused Twitter without evidence Thursday of manipulating which topics it considers “Trending” purportedly in order to ensure negative social media posts about him are promoted.

“Twitter makes sure that Trending on Twitter is anything bad, Fake or not, about President Donald Trump. So obvious what they are doing,” Mr. Trump said on Twitter. “Being studied now!”

Twitter declined to comment when reached by The Washington Times. The White House did not immediately return a message inquiring further about the supposed Twitter study being undertaken.

It was not clear what prompted the president to complain on Twitter about the platform’s “Trending” feature, which allows users to see a listing of popular topics being discussed on the service.

“Trends are determined by an algorithm and, by default, are tailored for you based on who you follow, your interests, and your location,” according to Twitter. “This algorithm identifies topics that are popular now, rather than topics that have been popular for a while or on a daily basis, to help you discover the hottest emerging topics of discussion on Twitter.”
