Entering the NFL draft, Washington’s biggest needs projected to be linebacker and tackle. In Round 1, they addressed the former. A day later, they focused on the latter.

Washington drafted Texas tackle Samuel Cosmi with the 51st overall pick Friday — using its second-round selection on a 6-foot-6, 314-pound giant who was an accomplished starter for the Longhorns. Cosmi, 22, earned second-team All-Big 12 honors in 2019 and started eight games for Texas last season before opting out.

Cosmi will have the chance to compete for a starting spot right away as Washington cycled through a number of left tackles last year.  During last year’s draft, the team traded star left tackle Trent Williams to the San Francisco 49ers — leaving a sizable void at the position. The team drafted Saahdiq Charles in an attempt to find Williams’ replacement, but Charles appeared in just one game in 2020 — at guard. The LSU product’s rookie season was derailed by injury.

Veteran Cornelius Lucas was Washington’s most consistent left tackle in 2020, starting eight games on the blind side. But the 29-year-old is entering the last year of his contract and has been a backup for most of his seven-year career.

Cosmi was the eighth tackle taken in this year’s draft — four of which, including Cosmi, were selected Friday. The tackle run started early in Round 2, with the Chicago Bears trading up for Oklahoma State’s Tevin Jenkins.  Three picks later, the Miami Dolphins took Notre Dame’s Liam Eichenberg, while the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Stanford’s Walker Little three picks after that.

According to NFL.com, Cosmi is a tackle “with above-average athleticism and solid technique” who still needs to develop in pass protection. Cosmi ran a 4.85 40-yard dash at Texas’ Pro Day. He can get out in space, able to drive bodies down the field.

Washington has two more picks left in Day 2 of the draft, with each coming in the third round. The team has an extra third-rounder because of last year’s Williams trade.

Cosmi, meanwhile, will join Lucas, Charles, Geron Christian and David Steinmetz as left tackles on the team’s roster.
