AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Security is being stepped up at the Maine Statehouse in response to a warning of more violence leading up to the inauguration of President-elect Joseph Biden, the Maine Department of Public Safety said.
The department, which oversee the Maine State Police and the Capitol Police, said it’s also including the Maine National Guard in the discussions should additional help be needed.
For now, the Department of Public Safety is focused on potential events this Sunday and on Wednesday, Jan. 20, when Biden is inaugurated.
The Maine State Police, working with its Maine Information Analysis Center, said it will remain in contact with its federal partners to maintain “situational awareness about the potential for civil unrest activities.”
Capitol Police is boosting its presence in and around the Statehouse but “does not discuss more specific operational details of its work,” the statement said.
For now, the Maine National Guard is authorized to participate in planning discussions, but there has been no formal activation Guard personnel, said Lindsay Crete, the governor’s spokesperson.
