CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A 68-year-old man driving a car that plowed into a sporting goods store in Carson City and injured five people has been charged with multiple crimes, including driving on a suspended license and reckless driving causing substantial bodily harm.
Ronald Wilkerson of Gardnerville told sheriff’s deputies he had a medical episode before he lost control of the Toyota Prius that crashed through the front of the Sportsman’s Warehouse on Jan. 15. None of the injuries were life-threatening.
Wilkerson was arrested Jan. 27 and booked on the charges that also include failure to maintain a travel lane. It’s not clear if has a lawyer or will be appointed one at a pending court appearance.
Wilkerson told KRNV-TV after he was treated at a local hospital that he and his wife were leaving the nearby DMV where he was trying to get his license reinstated when he had a seizure behind the wheel, leading to the crash.
He hit three people who were walking out of the store at the Carson City Mall and three others near the cash registers. Police say he briefly came to a stop and then accelerated again through a majority of the store.
