NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - One man fatally shot another who was shopping in a Target store in Tennessee, police said.

The gunman opened fire in a West Nashville store Sunday night in what police said appeared to be a targeted shooting.

David Van Dyke, 29, was charged early Monday with criminal homicide in the death of Avery Collier, news outlets reported, citing an arrest affidavit.

A preliminary investigation found that the 40-year-old victim had been shopping in the store with a female acquaintance for about five minutes when he was shot, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said.

The two men apparently did not know each other, but had two verbal altercations in the store and Van Dyke shot Collier during the second one, police said in a statement.

Customers fled the store after the shooting, including the suspect, who ran to a car in the parking lot, then came back to the entrance, put a gun in a planter and told officers he was responsible for the shooting, Aaron said.

Van Dyke was lodged in the downtown detention center. It wasn’t clear whether he has an attorney.
