MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Police in Meridian are once again patrolling the streets on horseback.

Blayze and Maverick, Clydesdale horses, made their debut on Wednesday, The Meridian Star reported.

Police Chief Chris Read told the newspaper the department had a mounted patrol several years ago and decided to roll it out again. He hopes the unit will bolster the department’s presence in the community and said he looked forward to seeing children interact with the horses.

The officers on horseback will patrol downtown several days a week and Bonita Lakes park on other days.

One of them, Bradley McNeece, said he has horses of his own.

“Getting to combine my career with something I enjoy doing is pretty neat,” he said.

But he said working with a horse takes more physical effort than driving a car.

“You’ve got to control them,” he said.
