ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - A Louisiana sheriff is refusing to release surveillance video after a deputy was accused of beating a jail inmate.

Rapides Parish sheriff’s deputy Ryan Lewis was fired and faces one count of simple battery, KLFY-TV reported.

Malcolm Xavier Williams of Lafayette says the deputy and four other corrections officers beat him March 22, just before he was supposed to be released from jail.

The public needs to see the video to know what took place, said Williams’ attorney, Ron Haley.

Haley says the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Department has ignored his requests for the surveillance video.

The sheriff’s office told KLFY they won’t release the video until their investigation is completed.
