PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The average price of a gallon of gasoline in Rhode Island is up another nickel, and has now soared 26 cents higher in the past month, AAA Northeast said Monday.

Gasoline is averaging $2.69 per gallon, also 26 cents higher than it was a year ago. The good news is that Rhode Island’s current per-gallon price is 8 cents lower than the national average.

The higher prices at the pump come as refinery utilization is at an all-time low and crude oil prices surged by more than $2 to $66 a barrel on Friday, the highest price in nearly two years, AAA said.

“With crude oil prices back on the rise, we could see the national average climb towards $2.90 this spring with some relief by early summer,” AAA spokesperson Lloyd Albert said in a statement. “The last time we saw the national average flirt with $3 was nearly three years ago in May 2018.”

Rhode Island’s per-gallon average is the same as in Massachusetts and 11 cents lower than in Connecticut.
