OPINION:
Last month several prominent Republican officials, including New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, former House Speaker Paul Ryan, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, implored their party not to nominate former President Donald Trump as its candidate for 2024. Instead, they urged, nominate someone who can win.
Yet these men seemed to have little concern about nominating someone with the skills and qualities necessary to lead our nation. It is only when the former president is losing that they condemn him. Contrast that with former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who recently said that Mr. Trump is “unfit for office” and “puts himself before country.” Former Defense Secretary James Mattis was recently quoted as calling Mr. Trump a threat to the Constitution and our democracy.
Our former military leaders took their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution very seriously. It is abundantly clear that many of our present and former Republican officials do not.
