Asked why he did not venture to our southern border recently when he was in a border state, President Biden said, “There are more important things going on” (“Biden defends not visiting border, points to ‘more important’ tasks,” Web, Dec. 6). How does he not realize that border security is national security?

National security is the main mission of the Department of Defense. Is it time for the DoD to take over border security?

Those doing border security are not looking inward toward the U.S. These fine and dedicated people are looking outward, toward foreign nations, and protecting against invasion, incursion and attack by foreign players.

Drug cartels in Mexico are killing hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. through the constant infiltration of illegal aliens and illegal drugs, such as fentanyl.

The Department of Defense is the best organization in the world to conduct United States border security. There are arguments against this, but this recent on-the-ground reality shows it may be time for Congress to change the laws and put this vital mission under the auspices of those who have the experience, training and equipment to finally defend America.
