OPINION:
The public watches in disbelief the antics of the holdouts in the Republic Party as repeat ballots fail to produce a House speaker (“McCarthy fails to secure votes for the sixth time, House remains in limbo,” Web, Jan. 4). I write as a naturalized, proud American who, while not a supporter of Rep. Kevin McCarthy, nonetheless objects strongly to a small minority of members bucking the large majority.
A sensible leader would have ensured that the votes were there before facing the full Congress. Unfortunately, the current circus proves that Mr. McCarthy lacks the wherewithal for leadership.
Though I cannot predict who will be elected speaker, I am confident it will not be Mr. McCarthy. However, for the first time in my life I am in agreement with President Biden, who has said previously that he would like to take political opponents behind the woodshed and punch their lights out.
Such a lesson is overdue for GOP holdouts. Hopefully they will suffer repercussions in the next election.
