Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on New Year’s Day after having complications from what a Pentagon spokesman said was a “recent elective medical procedure.”

The brief statement released Friday evening did not offer details about the medical procedure or the complications that resulted in Mr. Austin’s hospitalization.

“He is recovering well and is expecting to resume his full duties today,” Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, said in the statement.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks “was prepared to act for and exercise the powers of the secretary, if required,” Gen. Ryder said.
