OPINION:
The mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell thought that history is transformed by significant changes in economic conditions, political ideology or when a singularly noteworthy person assumes power.
We have the latter in President Trump, a political colossus who has changed both Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats are now subject to an eponymous syndrome of derangement in which the most extreme manifestations of intemperance are akin to British writer A.C. Swinburne’s description of the Boers as “dogs, agape with jaws afoam.”
The Democrats are so befuddled by Mr. Trump that they continue to pursue policies on the short end of the 80-20 divide (voter ID legislation; driver’s licenses for illegal migrants without English-language competence; gender reassignment for minors without parental notification).
I don’t know what metaphor for today’s Democratic Party is better: a careening big rig driven by an illegal immigrant licensed by a blue department of motor vehicles without demonstrated English-language competence or comprehension of road rules, or cosplaying elite liberals cavorting as frogs and a giraffe in the wake of this year’s State of the Union.
