OPINION:
Were you shocked — shocked — to learn that the man under arrest for trying to shoot up the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was a doctrinaire leftist?
The manifesto of Cole Tomas Allen reads like it was cribbed from a speech at the latest Democratic Party convention. Besides targeting Trump administration officials, the alleged shooter hated Christians and attended “No Kings” rallies in California.
His brother and sister were concerned about his growing radicalism.
President Trump has now survived three assassination attempts. The perps weren’t exactly members of Moms for Liberty.
The liberal media like to portray violence as coming exclusively from the right. President Biden claimed that White supremacy was the greatest threat to America.
What do Luigi Mangione (charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson), the alleged killer of Charlie Kirk, the man convicted of the 2012 attack on the Family Research Council, and the shooter at a practice session for the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game have in common? All are or were hard-core leftists.
Most of the political violence in America comes from the left. Black Lives Matter and antifa are just the latest examples.
To go a bit further back, the New Left was tearing up college campuses during the Vietnam War.
After the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, the president asked that “all Americans recommit with their hearts and resolve our differences peacefully.”
Yet individuals and groups on the left believe they have an inherent right to employ violence against their opponents.
Violence has always been an integral part of the left, going back to its origins in the French Revolution. The firing squads of Bolshevik Russia, the chaos that preceded National Socialism’s rise to power in Germany, the slaughter of Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward and the Cambodian Killing Fields are more examples of mass murder perpetrated by the left.
The left’s rhetoric also encourages violence. When prominent Democrats compare Mr. Trump to Adolf Hitler and charge that he is plotting to tear up the Constitution, this is not conducive to a reasoned debate.
If Democrats win the midterm elections, then it will be a public endorsement of their inflammatory rhetoric.
Voters need to think long and hard about this. In November, they won’t be voting only on the economy and foreign policy but also on whether we can put an end to the culture of violence, which benefits one side alone.
