Chanel’s creative director has designed a sandal that appears half-finished, sparking questions and criticism in the fashion world, multiple news outlets report.
The sandal, designed by Matthieu Blazy, covers only the heel and is held together by two tied straps. It barely supports the ankle and leaves the rest of the foot with no support.
Reactions to the runway presentation included “Recession indicators: half a shoe from Chanel” and “That’s not even a shoe.”
Some analysts said the design may be a social media statement rather than a wearable product. Italian culture publication Nss Magazine suggested the commercial version will likely include a sole.
The French luxury fashion house unveiled the sandal Tuesday during its 2026/27 Cruise collection show. Online buzz quickly followed.
Celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton, A$AP Rocky and Sofia Coppola attended the showing.
