OPINION:
I had to re-read it a few times but there it was, in Joseph Curl’s column last week (“Trump is no Reagan,” Web, Aug. 19): President Trump started the forever war in the Middle East. Seriously?
Mr. Curl also writes that Iran’s nuclear program is now considerably more advanced than it was before Mr. Trump took office and the world is less stable because of his actions. Are you kidding? Come on, man! Have you not read what your colleagues at the Washington Times have been saying about these very issues, and for many years?
For starters, the ’Middle East war’ has been ongoing for centuries, if not millennia. it’s hardly something that can be pinned on Mr. Trump. And the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was primarily funded by the U.S. Our “allies” may occasionally have chipped in a nickel or dime, was that agreement was a failure with which Iran did not comply anyway.
As many of Mr. Curl’s colleagues have pointed out many times, it is not possible to trust/negotiate/appease a terrorist/totalitarian regime.
The only way the world will ever be rid of the Iranian threat (more accurately, the Islamist threat) is to make it suffer what it vows to do to the U.S. and Israel, and wipe it off the face of the Earth.
Thankfully, after so many years, we finally have a president who understands all this and has taken action. If, after little more than six months, the situation is not fully resolved, can we all just have a little patience and give him some slack?
America can make the world a better place, and as President Ronald Reagan himself once said, if not us, who?
