Philanthropist Melinda French Gates will match the $10 million raised during pop star Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival this weekend, bringing the total donation to $20 million for nonprofits benefiting women and girls.
Ms. Rodrigo announced the donation Saturday before performing at the inaugural festival in Irvine, California. Ms. Gates, the ex-wife of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, joined the pop singer on stage for the announcement.
Ms. Gates said she and Pivotal, an organization she founded to accelerate social progress for women and young people, would match the $10 million donation.
“What Daisy Chain Fields sets in motion will last far beyond a single night, by opening up opportunity for women and girls around the world and showing a new generation how much their voices matter. I’m so proud to support Olivia’s vision,” Ms. Gates said in a statement.
Before the start of the festival, Ms. Rodrigo said that all proceeds — including ticket sales, waived artist fees and sponsorships — would go to 10 nonprofit groups benefiting women and girls.
Several of the organizations focus on reproductive rights and healthcare access, including the Center for Reproductive Rights, Jhpiego (formerly the Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics), the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, Planned Parenthood and the National Institute for Reproductive Health.
Ms. Rodrigo also partnered with FreeFrom, which supports survivors of gender-based violence, and the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
