Americans’ views on capitalism are split but lean negative, according to a new survey.
Just over half of Americans, 51%, believe capitalism is functioning “not too well” or “not at all well,” while 48% say it is functioning “very well” or “somewhat well,” according to a poll released Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal and NORC Research Center.
On the role of business versus government, respondents are divided but tilt toward wanting more regulation. Forty-five percent agree that America is successful due to respect for free markets and that government interference makes it weaker, while 52% agree that corporations have too much power and government should do more to limit corporate influence through laws, regulation and taxes.
A large majority believes power has shifted toward the wealthy: 64% say wealthy people have more power in society today than 50 years ago, compared to just 8% who say less.
Most respondents also see an imbalance of influence in Washington: Those who say billionaires have too much power and influence in Washington make up 76%, 78% say the same of political lobbyists and 73% say the same of large businesses. This compares to just 2% to 3% who say “people like you,” small businesses or working people have too much influence.
Confidence in American democracy is also low. Fifty-six percent say democracy is not working well or not working at all, while just 12% say it is working very well or extremely well.
Just 34% think the phrase “committed to democracy and majority rule” describes America extremely or fairly well, and 23% feel extremely or very proud of “the way its democracy works.”
On trust in the political process, just 16% agree the average citizen has considerable influence on politics, while 50% agree that “people like me don’t have any say about what the government does.”
Confidence in Congress is especially low, with only 6% expressing a great deal of confidence in it and 50% expressing hardly any confidence at all.
The findings track with other recent polling.
A Gallup survey found capitalism’s favorability at 54% in August 2025, down from 60% in 2021, while a Fox News poll found a record 38% of voters in early 2026 said moving toward socialism would be a good thing, up from 18% in 2010.
