This year’s Washington Nationals team has shown flashes of brilliance reminiscent of the 2019 championship squad. The offense is hitting and the starting pitching has given us a chance to win.

Unfortunately, the bullpen is giving those chances away.

Too many games have been lost in the later innings because of a relief staff that simply cannot hold a lead.

If the Nats had hung onto just half of those blown games, they would be leading the division instead of hovering around .500.

To the Lerner family and Nationals management: It’s time to spend. Invest in proven, quality relief pitchers. Winning in the majors isn’t cheap, but your dedicated season ticket holders and fans deserve a team capable of closing out games and competing for a pennant.
