Multiple Junior ROTC cadets in New York riding on a coach bus were hospitalized with heat-related illness Wednesday after the air conditioning failed.

Two coach buses carrying the cadets, all of them juveniles, were traveling in Hamptonburgh, New York, about 51 miles northwest of New York City. The air conditioning failed on one of the buses, causing multiple cadets to fall ill, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said on social media.

County officials told regional cable channel News12 Hudson Valley that around 17-20 cadets suffered dehydration and heat-related exhaustion.

Orange County Emergency Services said Wednesday on social media that the area had a heat index between 110 and 115 degrees.

Both buses were stopped, the cadets got off and those needing medical attention were taken to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said. The second bus continued on to its intended destination in New Jersey with the remaining cadets, according to News12 Hudson Valley.
