OPINION:
Looking at today’s Democrats, it is hard to believe that this is the party of Presidents Truman, who made the United States the first nation to recognize Israel after its independence, and Kennedy, who said of the Jewish state: “Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave.”
Today, Democrats are the party of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Democrat, who accuses Israel of genocide, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has threatened to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he sets foot in New York, and Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate for the Democratic Senate nomination in Michigan, who says he does not know whether Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state.
Last week, a slim majority of Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to cut off military aid to Israel. They included former Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, the second-ranking Democrat in leadership.
Democrats’ betrayal is despite the fact that Israel is our best friend in the Middle East and is fighting its own war on terrorism against Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
To show how far mainstream Democrats have drifted to the Democratic Socialists of America’s anti-Israel hysteria, when an aid package for Israel passed after the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, only 37 House Democrats voted against it.
Today, the lunatics are running the asylum. After several incumbents were defeated in Democratic primaries in New York and Colorado, establishment Democrats are running scared. They were terrified of supporting Israel in a party that is becoming more ardently anti-Israel by the day.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, who recently won the Democratic nomination for Congress in a New York district by defeating a 10-year incumbent, attended a pro-Palestinian rally the day after the 2023 massacre. Like Mr. El-Sayed, Ms. Chevalier says she questions Israel’s right to exist.
Democrats are once again on the wrong side of history.
Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. Although Arabs sit in Israel’s parliament, non-Muslims are barred from Saudi citizenship and cannot worship publicly, and Jews are effectively excluded from residency there. In Jordan, Jewish residency is similarly restricted. Even moderate Arab states are marked by one-party rule and the brutal crushing of dissent.
Israel fights for something good and noble. Democrats will one day regret being counted among their enemies.
