OPINION:
While I am a loyal subscriber to the Washington Times and I agree with Messrs. Laffer and Moore about the idea of Cuban liberation, I am always dismayed by “supporting” facts that lead the casual reader to believe a falsehood (“Trump can finish what 12 presidents failed to do in Cuba,” Web, July 27).
In particular, the graphic in this piece incorrectly implies that there is a 100-to-1 difference in the growth of GDP between the two nations. This is not true at all. Gross GDP increased in the U.S. 28.7 times since 1970. Cuban GDP increased 18.8 times. Then, if examined per capita, the U.S. increase was 17.2 versus 11.4 in Cuba.
The fact remains that Americans produce an order of magnitude more than the average Cuban. That could certainly change if Cubans were free, but misleading graphics ultimately undermine op-ed writers’ credibility and discourage readers from reading.
