OPINION:
Sen. Tim Kaine, Virginia Democrat, said recently that we don’t need a federal voter ID law (“Tim Kaine rejects national voter ID mandate, says states should handle issue,” Web, July 26). He claims that states should be free to pass their own voter laws, including voter ID laws.
But that would leave states open to the continuation of the scandals we are seeing in states governed by Democrats (e.g., New Jersey, California, New York, etc.) which register non-citizens to vote.
It could also mean that someone who votes in a Democrat-controlled state but had to move to a Republican-controlled state that has voter ID laws may not be able to vote.
We need a uniform set of federal voter ID laws to protect our elections from the fraud and abuse so often found in states governed by Democrats. Almost everything we do requires an ID; we should be willing to require ID for something as important as our elections. Mr. Kaine doesn’t make a lot of sense.
At a congressional confirmation hearing on Sept. 4, 2025, the senator also claimed that our God-given rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as expressed in the Declaration of Independence do not come from God, but from government.
Has Sen. Kaine joined the Democratic Socialists of America?
