OPINION:
“Some men see things as they are and ask, ’Why?’ I dream things that never were and ask, ’Why not?’”
I couldn’t help but think of this legendary George Bernard Shaw quote when I read President Trump’s July 1 Truth Social post proclaiming that, “for the first time ever,” the Republican party will hold a midterm convention this September in Dallas, Texas.
Given that lately the president has been ramping up his rhetoric about communism being “the biggest threat facing America in the last 250 years,” I would like to see another unprecedented event: a midterm debate between Mr. Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Mr. Trump is the iconic face of capitalism and Mr. Mamdani is the face of modern-day communism.
A recent Heartland poll found that 53% of voters ages 18 to 39 want a democratic socialist to win the next presidential election. So I think it’s imperative that President Trump — the standard bearer for the rugged individualism of capitalism if there ever was one — put his amazing rhetorical skills on display and wipe out this “warmth of collectivism” threat infecting the young of our country.
No, we’ve never had a midterm presidential debate before. But as the president said, this is the biggest threat ever facing our country. So why not?
