The NFL season is ticking closer. The Commanders announced Monday that their rookies will report to minicamp on July 24, with veterans checking into the team facility in Ashburn, Virginia, on July 28.
The Commanders — along with the rest of the league — also confirmed the joint practice schedule for the upcoming preseason. NFL teams are increasingly emphasizing the shared sessions with other teams over the preseason exhibitions. Coaches reason that they have more control over situations and personnel groupings during the non-televised workouts.
Washington will host the Miami Dolphins for a joint practice on Aug. 12 before heading to Baltimore for a session with the Ravens on Aug. 26.
The Commanders wrapped up their offseason workouts last week with a mandatory minicamp. Coach Dan Quinn outlined a focus on intensity as the team installed fresh systems designed by new offensive coordinator David Blough and defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
For the July and August training camp, Quinn will prioritize competition as he looks to avoid a repeat of last season’s disappointing 5-12 record.
“We’ll have a really competitive camp,” Quinn said as the Commanders ended minicamp on Thursday. “The guys are pushing it. They’re in good shape. I want to see them coming back in crazy shape, like undeniably fit to throw a great camp.”
The Commanders open the preseason at home against the Dolphins on Aug. 14. They’ll then hit the road to play the Lions in Detroit on Aug. 22 before ending the preseason against the Ravens in Baltimore on Aug. 28.
Washington opens the regular season on the road against the rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 13.
