Bed bug infestations are increasing among Southern states, including Texas, Tennessee, Florida and Georgia, multiple news outlets report.
Pest control experts say the rapid spread of bed bugs is tied to spring break travel. Travel expert Lee Abbamonte told Fox News Digital that travelers staying in budget-friendly lodgings with fast turnover rates, such as hostels, have a higher risk of experiencing bed bug infestation.
Bed bugs are small, flat insects that live in crevices where people sleep, including in mattress seams and behind headboards and baseboards.
The critters can also easily be carried on luggage and brought back home.
If exposure is suspected, entomologist Benjamin Hottel told Fox News that it is recommended that travelers place their laundry in a dryer for about 30 to 45 minutes, which will kill the insects.
