Some Supreme Court justices will reportedly come to Capitol Hill later this month to testify on their budget, marking a rare moment when the two branches of government will have a direct discussion in public.

Punchbowl News said justices will appeal before the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 20.

The high court is seeking an increase in its budget for security amid growing threats to the judiciary. A man was sentenced last year to more than eight years in prison for an assassination attempt on Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh.

Testimony from justices on their budget request used to be common, but it hasn’t happened since 2019, when Justices Samuel A. Alito Jr. and Elena Kagan appeared.

Questions ranged from whether the court’s proceedings should be televised to a code of ethics for justices to divisions among the members.

Those questions have raged in the years since 2019. The court now broadcasts live audio — but not video — of its argument and has moved to adopt a code of conduct.
