Spirit Airlines is flying its remaining airplanes to Arizona’s Phoenix Goodyear Airport after the carrier officially closed.
The airline is winding down operations after a $500 million federal bailout from the Trump administration failed to pan out. The company is now looking to monetize its planes, engines, gates and even landing slots at airports.
The airline leased about two-thirds of its fleet.
The high cost of jet fuel, up about 70% since the war in Iran began in February, is making Spirit’s planes less appealing to potential buyers.
Spirit Airlines was a U.S. budget airline that operated for 33 years. It was known for its bright yellow planes and cheap fares.
