Three’s company, and four’s a crowd, but to some, four might be exactly what they’re looking for.
A new law passed in West Hollywood, California, Tuesday allows polyamorous throuples and foursomes — romantic pairings of three and four people, respectively — to register legally as partners. The bill was introduced by West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman.
The measure lets people in relationships with multiple partners register with the city, granting them certain rights, such as hospital visits and tenant protections, according to the New York Post.

However, the law does not provide the same legal rights that married couples or traditional domestic partners receive.
Attorney and activist Christina Fialho says, “This law is just beginning.”
“I think it makes it possible for people to dream about a future they once thought was out of reach,” she told the Los Angeles Times.
For three or more people to register with the city, they must file paperwork with the city clerk. There are restrictions, as mutual consent and the absence of blood relations must be confirmed.
California is not alone in this ordinance; Massachusetts also began recognizing multi-partner domestic partnerships in certain areas in 2020.
