Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, one of the more outspoken anti-Trump leaders in Europe, dispensed with the customary diplomacy among allies regarding election results and openly cheered American voters’ Tuesday rebuke of President Trump.

Mr. Sanchez, who is facing a right-wing challenger in elections later this month, said Americans correctly rejected policies pushed by the Trump administration over the last two years.

“Yesterday, American society voted against policies that only make people poorer. Against hate. Against sexism. Against climate denial and against elite privilege,” he wrote on X. “It happened in Brazil. It just happened in the US. And it will happen soon in Spain.”

Mr. Sanchez and Mr. Trump’s relationship has been marked by strong disagreement over geopolitics, specifically over NATO defense spending initiatives and the war in Iran. Mr. Sanchez earlier this year refused to allow Spanish airspace to be used by American military aircraft on bombing missions.

European Parliament Vice President Christel Schaldemose mused that the election results could have a monumental impact on the future security of Ukraine and sustainability, two issues that the European Union and Mr. Trump have been at odds over.

“Not because everything now changes for the better, but because it could benefit the support for Ukraine, the green transition and relations with the rest of the world,” she said on social media.
