New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is reveling in Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s decisive victory in Michigan for a U.S. Senate seat.

“I haven’t spoken to him yet. I’m sure he is quite busy,” the NYC mayor said Wednesday. “I’ve had the privilege of speaking to him in the past, and I have to say that his election is one that means so much to so many.”

Mr. El-Sayed beat Republican Mike Rogers, with 52.7% of the vote to Mr. Rogers’ 45.9% on Tuesday night.

Mr. Mamdani commented on the campaign run against Mr. El-Sayed, including what he deemed “the racism and slander that he was met with on a daily basis.”

“It is incredibly exciting to see, as he said last night, that the good guys won,” the mayor added.

“This country has elected a new generation of leadership, a generation with a mandate to lower the cost of living, to build, not bomb, to never betray the working people who entrusted them with power,” Mr. Mamdani continued.

Mr. El-Sayed will be America’s first Muslim senator once he is sworn in on Jan. 3. Mr. Mamdani is New York City’s first Muslim mayor.

During the Tuesday elections, Democrats regained control of the House and Senate.
