Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville is telling Democrats to keep away from diversity, equity and inclusion policies during the next Congress, which will have Democratic majorities in both chambers.

On the “Politics War Room” podcast Thursday, Mr. Carville responded to California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna’s statement that “DEI is back.”

“I really like him,” Mr. Carville said of the Californian. “He’s a very personable man. I think these people are all wrong. They tried DEI. The country hated it. Just hated it. It cost us seats.

“The DEI people asked me to honor your identity above your humanity,” the strategist continued. “I cannot do that. To me, you’re a human being first. And if we bring this bull—— language back, we’re going to pay for it.”

Mr. Carville explained on the podcast that he considers himself a liberal, not a progressive, and wants to help rural Americans who feel abandoned by Democrats.

“And I think to the extent that this whole thing strikes people as another coastal people trying to impose something on the rest of the country, and the rest of the country doesn’t want this, and now we’re talking about bringing it back?” he said.
