Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that his government is seeking explicit security guarantees from Western allies in case Russia launches another war against Kyiv.

In a television interview that aired Thursday, Mr. Zelenskyy said it is extremely important for all parties involved to clearly understand the outcome of any peace deal between Ukraine and Russia.

“The question isn’t dozens of points, but simply an understanding of the outcome: If Russia starts (attacking) again, what will happen? Who will do what, with what means, and when?” Mr. Zelenskyy said in an interview with Ukraine’s private 1+1 television broadcast.

His comments come after Ukrainian diplomats met over two days in Brussels with European partners to discuss postwar security and reconstruction for Ukraine. Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s representative at the talks, said they separately discussed “threats from Russia to Ukraine and all of Europe, as well as joint steps to counter them.”

Those negotiations come just days before Ukraine and Russia are set to meet for mediated talks in Abu Dhabi next week. The discussions will be the first trilateral meeting between the two warring nations since February.
