Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro on Sunday said impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is a decision for Congress to make. But he said on NBC’s Meet the Press that “real questions” about Mr. Hegseth’s tenure at the Pentagon need to be addressed.
Calls for Mr. Hegseth’s ouster have grown significantly since the 2026 midterm elections that saw Democrats take control of both the House and the Senate. The costly, nine-month-old war in Iran is being blamed in some circles for heavy Republican losses across the country.
“From my perspective, he is completely incompetent. He’s like an eight-year-old playing with toy soldiers every day,” Gov. Shapiro said. “He is someone who I think is making America less safe, and there has to be real accountability.”

He said Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill increasingly agree that Mr. Hegseth’s time as defense secretary should be up.
“If Congress determines that the best approach is impeachment, then they’ll do that,” Gov. Shapiro said.
Widely considered a top-tier contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, Gov. Shapiro’s national prospects surged following his landslide reelection victory in the November 2026 midterm elections.
