The San Francisco 49ers will likely miss starting linebacker Dre Greenlaw in Monday’s primetime home game against the Washington Commanders.

NFL officials issued him a one-game suspension after he headbutted Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV during the Niners’ 32-29 victory Sunday.

League officials described the act as “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship” as they announced his suspension.

Greenlaw plans to appeal the decision, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.

“I was disappointed they decided to do that. But it is what it is,” Shanahan said Monday. “Hopefully the appeal process can go better tomorrow, and we can get it rescinded. But I’ll wait to see how that goes.”

Greenlaw was suspended for one game last year, when he played for the Denver Broncos, for an interaction with an official. The 29-year-old was also ejected from games during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
