Nearly four in 10 Americans believe they will be worse off financially if Republicans keep control of Congress in the midterm elections, according to a new poll published Tuesday.

Roughly 39% of voters said a Republican majority would leave them worse off financially, compared to 23% who said they would be better off with the GOP in charge, according to a YouGov poll for The Daily Mail.

Democrats fared better, with 28% of voters saying they would be worse off, 28% saying they would be better off and 28% saying their money situation would likely stay the same.

Only 8% believe they would be better off with a divided Congress, compared to 43% who expect no change.

The Nov. 3 election will determine which party controls the House and Senate.

Republicans currently have a 53-47 majority in the Senate and a 218-214 majority in the House with two vacancies. Democrats need to gain a net of four seats in both chambers to win the majorities.

In the poll, when voters were asked which party they trust more to make them and their families financially better off, 35% chose Democrats and 29% chose Republicans. Those who trust neither party made up 29%, and 7% said they are unsure.

Republican National Committee spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre refuted the findings, saying that “Americans know that President Trump is fighting every day to fix Bidenflation by putting more money in working families’ pockets.”

Among independents in the poll, 10% said they trust Republicans more on their finances, while almost half said they trust neither party and 25% said they trust Democrats more.

The Daily Mail/YouGov survey of 1,053 U.S. adult citizens was conducted between Oct. 2 and 5 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.
