A District of Columbia man will spend 25 years in prison after being sentenced Friday for a 2020 arson spree that left a homeless man dead.
At around 12:23 a.m. on May 13, 2020, D’Aundrey Scott lit a small object on fire and tossed it onto a man lying on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of H Street Northeast. The man kicked the object off and was not injured, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said in a release.
Then at 1:04 a.m., Scott approached Darryl Finney, 62, who was sleeping on the sidewalk in the 900 block of H Street. Scott ignited an object and tossed it onto Finney before dousing him in a flammable liquid, causing the victim to catch fire, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Finney managed to get up and get assistance from the Metropolitan Police Department and D.C. Fire and EMS. He suffered second-degree and third-degree burns and ultimately died in the hospital two days later.
Scott, now 32, has been in custody since his arrest on May 19, 2020, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
Scott also lit the porches of two homes along Morse Street NE, according to court documents cited by Washington’s WTTG.
Finney had no fixed address at the time of his death, according to a police release announcing Scott’s arrest.
Scott’s residence at the time was in Southeast D.C.
Scott pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and one count each of assault with a dangerous weapon, arson and felony destruction of property in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on Aug. 14, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
After the completion of his 25-year prison sentence, Scott will have to serve five years of supervised release.
“D’Aundrey Scott deliberately set two men on fire in the middle of the night, killing Darryl Finney in an act of horrific violence. His actions were cruel, calculated, and utterly unconscionable. Now, he will spend the next 25 years behind prison walls, answering for his crimes,” U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said in the release.
