D.C. police on Thursday said an officer shot a man who was accused of wounding another man in an earlier shooting in Northeast Washington.

Jeffery Carroll, the Metropolitan Police interim chief, said officers responded to the injured man around 5 a.m. at a bus stop in the 4100 block of Minnesota Avenue NE.

The chief said the suspect, whose identity wasn’t shared, fled the area after taking aim at the victim. The wounded man was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

Chief Carroll said that 20 minutes later, officers were called about a man wantonly firing a gun in a nearby parking lot in the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue NE.

“As officers exited their vehicle, that suspect discharged his firearm in the direction of another person who was exiting a store in that parking lot,” the chief said.

Authorities said an officer shot and wounded the armed suspect moments later.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. The assailant’s weapon was recovered from the scene.

Chief Carroll said the suspect will be charged in both cases. He did not know the relationship, if any, between the suspect and the wounded man at the bus stop.
