Clifford May’s “Obama forgets when Iran’s war against America began” (Web, Oct. 27) points out that former President Obama is off by 47 years in his estimation of the start date of the war with Iran.

During his tenure, Mr. Obama was not alone in failing to comprehend the threat that Iran presents to our civilization. Successive presidents since Jimmy Carter have all declared that Iran will not be allowed to acquire nuclear warheads — but none of them has taken any real action to back up their statements.

Mr. Obama probably deserves more criticism than the others because his Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) provided a clear path to eventually allowing Iran to acquire nuclear warheads. This was not too surprising because it was clear throughout Mr. Obama’s presidency that he was not a supporter of any nation possessing such weapons, even America.

Nor was Mr. Obama a supporter of the concept that mutual assured destruction had been a means of avoiding war between the major nuclear powers.

President Trump may well have underestimated the determination of Iranian leadership to continue to achieve its objective of becoming a nuclear nation. In so doing, he has demonstrated clearly to all that the present Iranian leadership must be removed to avoid further disruption to world peace.

Thank you, Cliff May, for making this so clear.
