A hockey player at the University of New Haven in Connecticut was killed in a car crash that involved a Mexican national who was previously removed from the country, the Department of Homeland Security said.

Ryan O’Shea, 21, died on Oct. 16 as he was driving south on Interstate 91 in North Haven, Connecticut. O’Shea’s Honda Accord was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado traveling the wrong way, Connecticut State Police said.

Driving the Silverado was Guillermo Carmona-Lopez of Bridgeport, Connecticut, according to police.

The collision pushed O’Shea’s car into another lane, where it was struck by a Jeep and then a third vehicle. The college student was pronounced dead at the scene.

DHS told Fox News that Mr. Carmona-Lopez entered the country illegally, despite being removed in the past.

“In May 2013, Border Patrol arrested Guillermo Carmona-Lopez, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, after he illegally entered the country,” DHS said. “Carmona-Lopez was issued an expedited removal and was removed from the country.”

O’Shea was a captain of his hockey team and aspired to work for the New York City Police Department after graduation. The 21-year-old was studying criminal justice with a concentration in police science. He was a native of Stony Point, New York.

“Ryan wanted to go into public service in order to help others,” Lorenzo Boyd, his academic advisor, said in a statement. “He was engaging in the classroom and will be missed greatly.”

DHS said the investigation is ongoing.
