Famed cinematographer Matthew Libatique, who worked on Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man” and Iron Man 2,” says the studio could use artificial intelligence to curb the cost of its digital effects-heavy movies, but that he does not think actors in those films would ever be replaced.

Mr. Libatique was asked about the use of AI in film while speaking at Evolution Mallorca on the Spanish island, where he is receiving an award. The cinematographer’s longtime film collaborator, director Darren Aronofsky, launched the AI studio Primordial Soup last year.

“[AI] could replace Marvel,” Mr. Libatique said, clarifying that Marvel and DC Studios “make these giant films and technology is clearly a part of it.”

“They make their movies for so much money, I can understand why, through visual effects, they are going to have to employ AI to curb some of their costs,” he said.

But actors need not fear losing out on roles due to AI, Mr. Libatique added.

“They’ve always been able to get a personality into the characters, whether it’s Chris Evans or Robert Downey Jr.; these people become these characters people fall in love with,” he said. “I don’t think there’s going to be a Tilly Norwood Batwoman or Black Widow. You can’t tell me you’re going to make an AI character that can do what Robert Pattinson does. You can’t.”

Mr. Libatique has been nominated three times for Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards for the films “Black Swan,” “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro.”
