Vice President J.D. Vance’s speech Thursday night at the Republican midterm convention was interrupted by chants of “48!” from the enthusiastic crowd, which made it clear that he was their choice to succeed President Trump.
Mr. Trump is the 45th and 47th president of the United States, so his successor will be the 48th president.
Mr. Vance has been identified among the potential successors to Mr. Trump and an heir to the MAGA movement. Others who have been mentioned as possible GOP presidential candidates include Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican.
Mr. Vance seemed amused by the uproarious chant from the crowd.
“We’ve got to take care of business in November, then we will worry about what comes next,” Mr. Vance told the audience.
The “48” chant was part of an overwhelmingly supportive response to Mr. Vance’s speech by the crowd at the Dallas convention.
When Mr. Vance took to the stage, the crowd erupted with loud chants of “J.D.! J.D.! J.D.!”
“It’s pretty cool to hear a crowd that is this fired up chant your name. So go ahead and do it again,” he said upon stepping up to the microphone.
They did it then, and again later in the speech.
