Princess Diana’s “revenge dress” is heading to auction for the first time in nearly 30 years.
Sotheby’s said the black silk evening gown by Greek designer Christina Stambolian will be sold on Dec. 9 in New York as part of the auction house’s Luxury Week.
The dress carries a preliminary estimate of $150,000 to $300,000.
Diana wore the off-the-shoulder gown to a Serpentine Gallery event in London on June 29, 1994, the same evening a televised interview aired in which her husband, then-Prince Charles, publicly admitted to infidelity.
The pairing of images gave the dress its nickname and helped popularize the term “revenge dressing.”
Before the gown is officially up for sale in New York, the dress will be exhibited in London, Hong Kong and Geneva. Sotheby’s said part of the proceeds will go to NHS Lothian Charity.
