Vice President J.D. Vance stood Friday with Matthew Palazzo, son of a New York City firefighter killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, at the ground zero memorial service honoring the victims, a person familiar with Mr. Vance’s plans confirmed to The Washington Times.
Mr. Palazzo joined the vice president as he represented the Trump administration at the solemn 25th anniversary ceremony alongside former Presidents Clinton, Bush, Obama and Biden.
In addition, the Coast Guard announced that it will name a ship after Mr. Palazzo’s dad, Jeffrey Palazzo, who responded to the plane crashes into the World Trade Center as a member of Staten Island-based FDNY Rescue 5 squad.
The younger Palazzo joined the Coast Guard in 2020 and serves as a machinery technician second class. On Saturday, the service branch will name two future cutters the Jeffrey Palazzo and Vincent Danz, both first responders who died in the 9/11 massacre.
The Coast Guard will commission the Fast Response Cutter Jeffrey Palazzo in New York, and the 154-foot vessel will be based in Guam. He was in the Coast Guard Reserve at the time of his death.
Jeffrey Palazzo and 10 of his colleagues from Rescue 5, known as the “Staten Island 11,” died when the towers collapsed. They’re among the 343 New York Fire Department personnel killed in the attacks.
