Bessent tells Carney to stop yapping and start governing

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sees Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as a “yapping” Dachshund who needs to learn his place.

Mr. Bessent said at an event in Washington this week that Canada’s leader is flailing about as he seeks to work his way out of a burgeoning trade war with the U.S.

“The prime minister needs to stop campaigning and start governing. He knew this was coming,” the Treasury chief said.

Mr. Bessent drew a comparison to canines, saying he once had a 110-pound German Shepherd that he would take to a dog park, only to be pestered by an 8-pound Dachshund.

“He had enough of the yapping, and it’s about the same,” he quipped.

Mr. Carney has slapped a 50% tariff on some U.S. products in retaliation for President Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods. Mr. Trump said his tariffs will pressure Canada into a more conciliatory trade posture.

Mr. Bessent suggested Canada’s retaliation shouldn’t be a major worry for the U.S.

“The Texas economy is bigger than Canada,” he said.
