OPINION:
President Trump has made very serious remarks in relation to Northern Ireland, which holds a fragile peace with the Republic of Ireland after decades of terrorism (“On Irish soil, Trump says unified Ireland would be ‘a great feather in everybody’s cap’, ” Web, Sept. 12).
His remarks were made in response to the question of a journalist with a clear republican agenda, but never did anyone think he would go so far with such arrogance on a matter which has led to the troubles and the deaths of over 3.000 people.
Mr. Trump’s statement has the potential to destabilize the peace process and reverse all the U.S. did to broker peace when George Mitchell was special envoy for Northern Ireland under President Clinton.
Mr. Trump has interfered in a very sensitive matter. The glib remarks he made this time could land him in serious diplomatic trouble. He should not be getting in the middle of the affairs of two countries that have struggled to build a delicate peace in Northern Ireland.
London is surely furious at him. He has stepped over one of the thickest red lines there is by endorsing a united Ireland.
