White House border czar Tom Homan has confirmed that ICE is investigating Rep. Ilhan Omar to see if she obtained her U.S. citizenship through fraud.
“No one’s above the law,” Mr. Homan told Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing.”
He declined to provide details but was “confirming” the probe, which Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin teased last week.
Mr. Mullin, a former GOP senator, said Ms. Omar, Minnesota Democrat, “married her brother to try to bring him to the United States.
“There may be more to this, the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with,” Mr. Mullin said in an interview with conservative social media figure Benny Johnson.
The DHS chief said any case against Ms. Omar would not be “a political case” and would proceed only based on evidence.
Ms. Omar, a Somali by birth, came to the U.S. in 1995 at age 12. Her family was granted refugee status, and she was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2000.
For years, she has denied claims from conservative opponents that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom she married in 2009, was her brother and that the union was to help him with immigration benefits.
It’s part of a complex string of relationships for the Democrat.
She had been in what she characterized as a Muslim marriage with Ahmed Hirsi and applied for a regular marriage license in 2002, but didn’t finalize it.
They split in 2008, and she married Mr. Elmi. She has said she divorced him in 2011 under Muslim “faith tradition.”
She and Mr. Hirsi then reconciled, and she listed him as her husband in her 2016 congressional campaign literature, but admitted at the time she was not formally divorced from Mr. Elmi. That would occur in 2017.
Ms. Omar would marry Mr. Hirsi in 2018, then file for divorce a year later. She then married Tim Mynett, a political consultant who worked on her campaign, in 2020.
Ms. Omar has three children with Mr. Hirsi, two of them from the period before her marriage to Mr. Elmi and one from after she divorced him and reconciled with Mr. Hirsi.
Mr. Homan, in his interview with Fox News over the weekend, said someone who has obtained U.S. citizenship through naturalization can be denaturalized and deported.
