President Trump thinks artificial intelligence’s low popularity could be fixed by a name change.
On Saturday, the president asked the public how the technology should be rebranded.
“Many people think that the words ‘Artificial Intelligence’ are inaccurate, and very ineloquent,” he wrote on social media. “A far more elegant and accurate description of this new phenomena would be Superior Intelligence (SI) or, Extreme Intelligence (EI) or, Supreme Intelligence (SI).”
Mr. Trump included an option for X and Truth Social users to vote on which name they prefer.
“This is a Poll, and I would appreciate everybody voting! Which is the best name for this ever growing ‘Revolution?’” he wrote.
Ahead of the midterm elections, Mr. Trump has stood firm in supporting an AI-friendly regulatory environment, calling the growing discussion of the technology’s dangers a hoax.
He posted this month, “AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is HOAX. … AI, and Data Centers will be the Greatest Economic Development Engine in History.”
Still, the public remains concerned about the technology and the physical infrastructure required to support it.
A September survey by the University of Massachusetts Amherst of 1,000 Americans found that a mere 5% strongly support the construction of AI data centers in their local community.
Meanwhile, a September poll by Politico found that 63% of Americans think AI has “at least a moderate risk of destroying humanity.”
The polling comes as heads of AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI have argued that the technology’s rapid development is a danger to humanity.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican, has said Congress will not “act irrationally or haphazardly” by imposing burdensome regulations on the industry.
