President Trump pledged Wednesday to campaign in Alaska for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan.
Mr. Trump said a second candidate also named Dan Sullivan on the ballot — a confusion tactic allegedly engineered by Democrats — could cost the Republican the seat in a tight race.
“It’s close for one reason, that they have a phony Dan Sullivan. This guy is a phony, and he was put up by the Democrats,” Mr. Trump said.
He noted that the other Dan Sullivan had never been in politics and rarely voted.
“And [Democrats] don’t admit it, but it’s been so proven. So, I will go to Alaska to make sure that a great senator gets reelected.”
Mr. Trump said his visit to Alaska will happen in the last 30 days before the election and that he will be making a “lot of stops.”
Mr. Trump won Alaska over his Democratic opponents by wide margins in 2016, 2020 and 2024.
“Nobody has helped Alaska like Donald Trump. We’ve invested billions and billions of dollars and created trillions of dollars in value. You have Japan, you have South Korea, you have all these people now going to Alaska to load up with fuel, load up with oil, build pipelines, everything else,” Mr. Trump said.
Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from the island community of Petersburg, advanced to the general election recently and was among the top four finishers after the Aug. 18 primary.
He will face off against incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and Democratic former U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola in a ranked-choice contest this November.
The political newcomer Mr. Sullivan successfully sued to get back on the ballot after being removed by state elections officials who said his candidacy was intended to confuse voters.
